Avoid Wheat Gluten in pet food

Posted: April 27, 2007 in All, Blogroll, Family, rants

The pet food scare has been linked to the wheat gluten found in the pet food. The problem seems to have come from the Wheat grown in China. There are a lot of Vets that are recommending to avoid all pet foods and treats that contain wheat gluten.  And now there is evidence that pigs have eaten some of the recalled pet food, although it doesn’t appear right now that those pigs have reached the human food chain.    I think we’ve just begun to scratch the service of the pet food industry.  There has been evidence linked everywhere that pet food is full of stuff that’s bad for our pets. check out this website for more resources: www.truthaboutpetfood.com   I’m not saying that Menu foods is taking part in this.  I am saying, there are no regulations on pet foods.  Basically, anything the pet food company wants to put in, it goes in.  The pet food companies can put in the cheapest ingredients to gain the most profit.   It doesn’t matter if the pet food is any good for the pet or not.  We  need to get some sort of regulation put in place to protect our pets.  I think this problem with wheat gluten will be only the beginning to a very long chapter in the pet food industry.

  1. SurfaceEarth says:

that’s horrible and shocking. rat poison. i am afraid we didn’t get to follow the whole story, is it accidental or was it really considered an essential ingredient???? The same school of thought can be applied to so very much today, our foods, cleaning products, hair dyes, they say we adapt to our environment…i can’t help thinking we hit a wall at some point.

  2. Manymeez says:

Publicly, it hasn’t been announced whether it was accidental or not. I’ve been doing some research on this for a few weeks before the rat poision thing broke out. I personally think it was negligence on the behalf of the pet food companies. I think their goal was/is to make as much money as possible. There are no regulations put in place on pet food, so they can put whatever they want in the food. I really wouldn’t be surprised if they put dead rats in the food, that had traces of rat poision in their systems. I just know that the entire thing is disturbing, and I hope this latest scare will open some eyes to the reality of what’s going on.

I’ve edited this post since the problem was changed from rat poison to wheat gluten.

  4. Some useful info in this post, thanks.

  5. IMHO until we stop over processing our food chain these scare will continue – we must get away from this “chemicalisation” of food…for us OR our pets

  6. On March 14, 2007 while I was in the hospital I was informed by phone because I was out of state that my almost 7 year old had died.
My neighbor who was caring for my cat took him
to the vet but Sassy Attitude (male) died five minutes after he got there.
My vet did an autopsy and said he died of rat
poisoning. An inside cat who had bad teeth so he
was feed Special Kitty moist food from Wal-Mart.
My Sassy Attitude was on David Letterman show
December 12, 2003 for stupid pet tricks. He was toilet trained plus he flushed the toilet and put the seat down. He even put it down when male visitors would come to our house. A couple of close calls say the plumber and maintenance man.
I am widowed and live alone and Sassy was my biggest comfort.
Do you know of any class action suits? Wheat gluten is still on the packages. Are they safe? I thought they were to replace wheat with corn or flour!!
I have two other cats but they are more outside cats and don’t have Sassy’s personality. Right now I have them on dry food Meow Mix. Any update would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Maryhelen
